International Women’s Day: Northern Power Women Awards celebrate major contributions to gender equality

As today is International Women’s Day, there is no more fitting time to commend Northern Power Women Award winners’ major contributions to gender equality. Totaljobs were proud to support the inaugural awards which took place in Manchester last week, celebrating the outstanding achievements of women in the Northern Powerhouse region.

Over 400 people attended the awards, which saw 51 on the shortlist from 700 nominations over 9 categories. Hosted by leading BBC presenter Leah Boleto, 9 inspirational winners including BBC, Northern Rail, Wigan Council, scooped awards at the evening ceremony. Totaljobs has also released a blog piece on ‘How far are we from gender equality in STEM?’ further highlighting the gender imbalance as only 14.4% of STEM employees are women, according to WISE’s report. There is a general consensus that the perception of women in STEM has to improve, like in many other sectors. So how can this be changed? What needs to be done to increase the gender equality? It appears that there is a real strive in organisations to make change happen. Read more about the views of influential women who currently work in STEM.

Totaljobs’ recent research also shows that the gender pay gap exists before graduates enter the workforce, with females applying for jobs with salaries lower than men. A number of questions can be raised as a result including is society doing enough to encourage females to aim higher?

What we do know is that initiatives like the Northern Power Women awards and days like today can only act as inspiration to empower women to reduce the gender equality.
